Eggs are a common source of protein in our diets, and they’re often used in several types of dishes.  I bet you never thought they’d have so many beauty-making properties.

Create Beautiful Skin and Hair with EggsThe protein in eggs is beneficial for repairing tissues, but their benefits don’t stop there.  They’re also a source of lutein, a compound that can moisturize skin and make it more elastic.  These properties are also great for hair and nails as well.  Eating eggs can help the way your skin and hair look.

Ways of using eggs to renew skin

Eggs are often times easily procured, but you need to keep in mind that if you are allergic to them, we do not recommend you use them in masks.

The yolk and the egg white can be applied differently.  The egg white helps to illuminate and tone skin, which the yolks are rich in vitamin A.

Eggs for toning the face: Beat an egg white until it is frothy.  Apply to your face, avoiding the area around the eyes.  Allow to set for 20 minutes, then wash with warm water.  This can also be useful for treating minor cases of acne.

Eggs for bags under the eyes: Inflammation under the eyes generally gives one the appearance of being tired or sick, but eggs can be a small, helpful secret.  Apply using a Q-tip, making a thin layer of egg whites over the bags.  Avoid getting it into your eye.  Allow to work for 10 minutes, then wash with warm water.

Egg masks for the skin

If used correctly as an ingredient in your masks, eggs will help heal both oily and dry skin.

For oily skin: Egg whites are to be used for this skin type.  Mix 3 tablespoons of oat flour until creating a paste.  Apply as a mask to your face and neck, and let set for around 15 minutes before washing with warm water.

For dry skin: Use the egg yolk, which is rich in fatty acids and vitamins.  Mix the egg yolk with one teaspoon of olive oil and lemon juice.  Apply the mixture to your face and neck (you can also use a small brush with soft bristles).  Avoid touching the area around your eyes and lips.  Allow to set for 15 minutes, then rinse with warm water.

For softer skin: Use the entire egg.  Mix with a few drops of olive oil, one tablespoon of organic honey, and one teaspoon of rose water.  Apply to your face, but do not use too much.  Use a soft brush to apply, and allow to set for 20 minutes before rinsing with warm water.  This recipe helps soften skin and eliminate marks.

To lighten sun-tanned skin: Mix one egg with two tablespoons of honey and mix well.  Use the mixture to apply a thin layer in the areas you would like to lighten (this can even include your face).  Allow to act for 10 minutes, then rinse with warm water.

For hair

Eggs can be a useful ingredient for improving the look of your hair.  Its compounds are perfect for making hair look healthy and soft.

Egg conditioner: If your hair looks dry, an egg mask could be of great help.  Mix equal parts of one egg and organic yogurt.  Add one teaspoon of olive or almond oil, and apply the mixture to your hair, spreading it evenly.  Then place a shower cap on your head, and allow to set for 30 to 45 minutes.  Wash as normal, then rinse.

For shine and volume: Beat one egg with juice from one lemon and mix well.  Use the mixture on your hair, spreading it around.  Allow to set for half an hour, then wash with your normal shampoo.

For an oily scalp: If you tend to have shiny, oily hair, your scalp might be oily.  One trick for fighting this is to use a beaten egg white on your scalp.  Apply it to chunks of hair, and let set for half an hour.  Then remove with your normal shampoo, and rinse with lemon juice.

For dry hair: If your hair looks dry and lifeless, you could make it shiny once again with an egg white.  Mix one egg with one cup of low-fat milk, and stir well.  Apply the mixture to your hair and scalp, gently rubbing, and allow to set for half an hour.  Then wash with shampoo.

Warnings with Eggs

Avoid using these masks if you suffer from an allergy to eggs or any of these components.  Keep in mind that eggs can smell unpleasant when they start to dry, so if you are sensitive to the smell, you may find this to be intolerable.

And lastly, if you have very light colored hair, the egg whites could “stain” it, making it look slightly yellow.  This depends on the color of the yolk, but we recommend considering this before choosing to apply one of these masks and hair recipes.
