Although coconut oil was seen as fairly unhealthy in the past, recent studies have shown that in truth, it is just the opposite.  We used to think that saturated fats were harmful, but studies have revealed that they are healthy, and they have several different uses, both for cooking and for natural beauty.  Currently it is used as an ingredient in different cosmetic products.

What is Coconut oil?

Coconut oil is extracted from coconut pulp.  It is solid at room temperature, just like butter, margarine, or other products used as a spread.  It is a good alternative for vegans that don’t consume animal products.

Properties of coconut oil

Plant-based saturated fat: coconut oil does contain saturated fats.  However, saturated fat is not considered to raise cholesterol levels, nor is it related to the risks attributed to other saturated fats from animal sources.

Rich in medium chain acids: Some studies show that medium-chain fatty acids can help with weight loss.  However there is still not sufficient evidence to say definitively that this is so.

A good source of lauric acid: the majority of saturated fat in coconut oil comes in the form of lauric acid, which is considered by many to be the healthiest source of fat.  Studies show that lauric acid could increase “good” cholesterol levels.

High in calories, provides energy: Independently of its presentation, we need to consider that each gram of fat provides more calories.  So if you are following a low-calorie diet, remember to consume coconut oil in moderation.

Cosmetic benefits of coconut oil

Coconut oil is nutritious, but it can also offer natural beauty benefits.

Good for the skin: this is a good moisturizer from head to toe.  It is especially useful for feet, lips, and dry hands.  Of course, you’ll want to put it to the test in winter.

Massage oil: Just like other natural options, coconut oil is great for massages.  In fact, the fact that it is solid at room temperature makes it easier to apply.  At the end of the massage, you’ll not only feel relaxed, you’ll also be moisturized.

For hair: applying coconut oil to your hair can help moisturize it, making it shiny.  It’s best to place the coconut oil in your hands, and apply to clean hair.  Once you’ve finished, cover with a plastic cap and allow to work for at least two hours.  Then wash your hair well, and the difference will be noticeable immediately.

Lastly, we should also mention that not only is coconut oil affordable, it can also be used for a variety of things.  You can include it in your diet, or use it on your skin or hair.  You should definitely grab some.
